Silent Madrid march Honours Maricarmen
Spain holds tributes for Maricarmen
Oct 8
RTVE’s edited Madrid march package follows the Tenants’ Union-led silent procession from Puerta del Sol along Alcalá and Cibeles, with a stop at City Hall, toward Maricarmen’s former home nearly four kilometres away. Participants recall 15M and demand changes to housing policy. The march is a tribute and continuing mobilization, not evidence that a new housing measure has passed.
On October 8, commemorative housing mobilizations take place across Spain after Maricarmen’s death. RTVE follows Madrid’s silent march from the Sol camp to her former Retiro home, with a provisional 20,000 attendance estimate attributed to the government delegation, and tributes in Valencia, Oviedo, Barcelona and other towns. Reports and interviews preserve grief, demands for housing rights and prospective further action. Duro calls the solidarity potentially transformative while acknowledging slow structural change.
