Quake, floods and tornadoes Damage and emergency alerts
Strong earthquake strikes Panama
Oct 9
TV Brasil's disaster roundup reports a Panama earthquake of magnitude 7.7, describes a Panama City epicentre at twelve kilometres depth and tsunami warnings in nine countries, and includes a witness account. It then reports ongoing Santiago-region flooding, a Las Condes emergency and mud entering homes; Jorge Ferrari describes damage and a failed wall. The Sicily item reports a Marsala school evacuation of about 300 children, eight injuries and serious injuries to two motorists after a tornado. The Brazil closing shows tornado damage to an Alegrete farm and winds near 100 km/h throwing roofing into a Chapecó home. Measurements and casualty counts remain the broadcast's claims; these provisional figures are not silently reconciled with other reports.
A strong earthquake struck Panama on October 9. Tagesthemen attributes magnitude 7.6 and a Herrera epicenter to the U.S. earthquake agency and reports people seeking safety outdoors, provincial power cuts and a temporary Central American tsunami warning. RTVE attributes magnitude 7.7 and a southern Pacific-coast natural-park epicenter to USGS, reports a precautionary Panama City airport closure and a tsunami warning, and says casualties and damage are not known. Retain these provisional, source-specific measurements and location descriptions; no tsunami impact or final casualty count is established. TV Brasil's October 9 account reports magnitude 7.7, describes a Panama City epicentre at twelve kilometres depth and tsunami warnings in nine countries, and includes a witness account. Its location description differs from the earlier Herrera/southern-coast descriptions; all remain provisional, attributed claims without an invented reconciliation. ABC's later October 9 report describes magnitude 7.7, collapsing buildings including a church, searches of rubble, authorities reporting several injuries and dozens of aftershocks including one reported at magnitude 6.6. It says multi-country tsunami alerts, including the U.S. West Coast alert, were cancelled late that day while damage assessment continued. It attributes U.S. monitoring and readiness to assist to Marco Rubio. This compatible later damage/precaution update does not replace earlier provisional measurements or epicentre descriptions, establish a final casualty count or report completed U.S. assistance. Fox's October 9 preliminary bulletin also reports magnitude 7.7, shaking and evacuations in the capital, tremors in Colombia and tsunami warnings for Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Guatemala. Its absence of immediate injury reports is not a final casualty finding and does not contradict ABC's later attributed injury report or alert-cancellation update. No provisional magnitude or epicentre description is silently reconciled. CCTV's October 10 bulletin attributes magnitude 7.6 and 10-kilometer depth to CENC, placing the quake at 12:56 local time October 9 (01:56 Beijing time October 10). It cites local media for Upper Pitalosa, about 200 kilometers from the capital, and Veraguas/Los Santos impacts, and civil-defense authorities for 27 injuries, collapsed buildings, infrastructure damage and a temporary Tocumen closure. These evolving figures and location remain source-attributed alongside earlier differing measurements and descriptions, not a reconciled epicenter or final toll. France 2's October 10 roundup reports the previous day's Panama earthquake as magnitude 7.7, shows collapsing buildings and precarious scaffolding, and describes searches for trapped people and dozens of injuries. It calls the quake the country's largest in over a century. Those claims remain attributed alongside the other provisional measurements, location descriptions and earlier/later injury figures. Oman TV's October 10 bulletin describes two quakes, aftershocks, residential collapses and canceled tsunami alerts. It reports at least twenty-seven injured, then relays Mulino's major-disaster declaration and statement that authorities had not yet recorded deaths or injuries and that this might change. The broadcast supplies no chronology reconciling those incompatible injury statements. Both are retained with attribution, without converting either into a final casualty finding.
